Save the world, have babies.

This week has consisted of school, the Jazz playoffs, and Moana. I have been watching Moana for the last week and a half about every other day. I love the soundtrack and have at least one song in my head every day. If you haven't seen it yet, just buy the DVD because it's that good. As for the Jazz, it has been nail biting to watch but hopefully they can pull through and beat the Clippers! #takenote
For school I was given the opportunity to watch a 2 hour film about the decreasing population in the world. Up until this point, I was under the impression that we have a growing population and we should have less kids because it is causing problems having so many people here on the earth.
It was interesting to see in this video that we are actually decreasing our population all around the world. They talked about how the fertility rate to maintain a population needs to be around 2.13. Fertility rate is the amount of births a woman has in her lifetime. A majority of the world is well below that fertility rate.
Now this might not seem like a big deal right now, but we know that the elderly population is just getting bigger and bigger. This will get even worse as we start to get to retirement age. We will have a smaller working class to help subsidize the elderly's social security and medicare. With the elderly population growing and the working class shrinking, there will probably be some major changes in the future. The video talks about how eventually the US will have to cut back on the social security and medicare benefits, increasing taxes, and the elderly not being able to retire at 65 anymore. It will only get worse if our working class keeps getting smaller.
If we increase our fertility rate above 2.13 our working class will get bigger as time goes on. This will help lessen the burden among the working class to support the growing elderly population. So lets save the world and have more babies!
The video talks about many other things but I just wanted to touch briefly on the fertility rate and how it will affect us in one aspect. I will try to put the link below so you can view it if you would like. It has much more information in it and it may explain some other questions you may have.
