Climbing out of Poverty, Is It Possible?
Each of our families have their own culture. In my post from last week I talked about the unwritten rules within our families. These rules drive the various cultures between families. Culture can be a cause of economic status. Speaking specifically about economic status this week, I have found similarities with both the wealthy and poor. I'm speaking generally because there are always exceptions, but for the most part I believe that on both ends of the socioeconomic spectrum of wealth and poverty, they care about some of the same things. I see both caring about what other people think of them and how much they have. I also see that there is often an absence of parents in children's lives.
On the extremely wealthy side of things, one or both of the parents are often gone working many hours filling big responsibilities to be able to pay for all the family's big expenses. They are often gone from their children for long periods of time and the kids see their nannies more than they do their parents. Sometimes families choose to have one parent stay home. If these families choose to have a parent home to raise the kids, they often still have nannies available to help out the practically single parent. Even with one parent home, it still seems like there is an absence of a mom or dad around. I find this to be true with poor families as well. Often times, there are single mothers raising their kids and they need to work to help support their children. This causes them to be absent from their children's lives at home as well.
I watched a video about a woman named Tammy and what she has done to make a living for her family. I will post a couple of links so you can see what her situation was back in 2001 and a second video that was recorded in 2013. I highly recommend watching these videos; I found them very intriguing.

These videos were an eye opener for me and helped me see how difficult it is for kids to get out of their family's culture and economic status. I think it is possible for people to change economic classes but I think it is difficult and getting more difficult as the years go by. Education plays a big role in creating opportunities for kids. Becoming educated can help a person become more aware of what resources are around them and how to utilize those resources to get ahead and create a more successful life. The more you know, the more it can help you with making wise decisions, as well as keep you out of trouble.
